Gulfport Admirals Athletic Department

The Gulfport School District Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Ricky Smith as the district’s next Athletic Director at its April meeting. Smith will officially assume the role in June 2026.

Current Athletic Director Matt Walters will continue to serve in the position through June, ensuring a smooth and stable transition at the conclusion of the 2025–2026 school year.

The district extends its appreciation to Walters for his leadership and contributions to Gulfport athletics over the past three years. Under his direction, Gulfport’s athletic programs have continued to build on a tradition of excellence both on and off the field.

Smith brings extensive experience in both athletic administration and coaching. He currently serves as Athletic Director and head baseball coach at Pass Christian High School, where he has led the program to sustained success and postseason appearances in recent years. With more than two decades of coaching experience in South Mississippi, including 14 years as a head coach, Smith has a strong record of developing student-athletes and building competitive programs.

“I am excited for this opportunity to lead Gulfport Athletics,” says Smith. “I’m ready to get to work to build on what is already a great foundation of excellence in athletics. Thank you to the leadership of Gulfport School District for trusting me to take us forward!”

Smith’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter for Gulfport athletics, as the district continues to build on its strong foundation while looking ahead to sustained growth and success. District leaders are confident that his experience, leadership, and commitment to student-athletes will further strengthen Gulfport’s proud athletic tradition and create new opportunities in the years ahead.
